Bringing a new baby home changes just about everything. Your days suddenly revolve around feedings, diaper changes, snuggles, and figuring out a brand-new rhythm as a family.
So when you add family photos to the mix, it’s completely understandable to wonder how everyone is going to be ready and looking at the camera at the same time.
The good news? They don’t have to be.
A family newborn photography session isn’t about creating a perfectly posed version of your family. It’s about documenting this very short season—the way your baby fits in your arms, the way an older sibling leans in to get a closer look, and all those tiny details that will change before you know it.
Here’s what you can do to prepare for your newborn photos without adding another stressful thing to your list.

What Is a Family Newborn Photography Session?
A family newborn session includes more than photographs of your new baby.
Of course, we’ll document all those tiny newborn details you want to remember, but we’ll also create photographs of your family together. That might include photos of Mom and baby, Dad and baby, siblings together, each parent with the kids, and your whole family.
Those relationships are such an important part of your baby’s story.
Years from now, your child won’t only get to see how tiny they once were. They’ll also get to see the way you held them, how their sibling snuggled beside them, and just how loved they were from the very beginning.

When Should You Schedule Your Newborn Photos?
If possible, it’s helpful to plan your newborn session before your baby arrives. That gives you one less thing to think about once you’re home adjusting to life with a newborn.
But babies have their own timelines, so there’s no reason to stress about having photographs taken on one exact day.
Your baby doesn’t suddenly stop being worthy of newborn photos because you missed a particular window. A slightly older newborn may be more alert or less curled up than they were during those first days, but that can also give us beautiful opportunities to capture eye contact, expressions, and interaction.
The goal is to photograph this season—not to make your baby fit into a specific schedule.
What Should Your Family Wear for Newborn Photos?
You don’t need to find perfectly matching outfits for everyone—or spend hours ordering clothes online and hoping everything works together.
Instead, think about choosing pieces that coordinate well and feel comfortable. Soft, neutral colors and subtle textures tend to photograph beautifully and keep the attention on your family.
And if figuring out what everyone should wear already feels like one more thing on a very long pre-baby or postpartum to-do list, my client closet is available to make that part easier.
I have a collection of beautiful, photo-ready pieces available for Mom—or, if you’d rather take even more off your plate, I can help style the whole family from my client closet. We can choose pieces that coordinate beautifully and photograph well together without you having to shop for an entirely new wardrobe just for your session.
If you prefer to wear your own clothing, that’s wonderful too. We can use the same approach: coordinating colors and textures rather than trying to make everyone match exactly.
Most importantly, I want you to feel comfortable and like yourself. You’ve just had a baby. Getting dressed for newborn photos should feel simple—not like another complicated task you have to figure out on your own.

How Do You Prepare Older Siblings for Newborn Photos?
If you have an older child, you might be more worried about their cooperation than the newborn’s. That’s completely normal.
The best thing you can do is keep expectations simple.
Rather than putting pressure on them to “be good” or smile for every photograph, let them know they’re going to spend some time loving on their new baby and having pictures taken with the family.
We can work with their personality and attention span rather than expecting them to sit perfectly still.
Some of my favorite sibling and newborn photo ideas are also the simplest: lying next to the baby, gently touching their tiny toes, giving them a kiss, or cuddling together with Mom or Dad.
Those interactions often tell us much more about this season than a perfectly posed smile ever could.
Don’t Forget Dad and Baby Photos
It’s easy for so much attention to be placed on Mom and baby during the newborn stage—and understandably so. But I also love making space for photographs of Dad with the new baby.
There’s something incredibly special about seeing a tiny newborn tucked into Dad’s arms or capturing the way he looks at this brand-new little person.
And these dad and baby photos become even more meaningful as your child grows.
We’ll photograph different combinations throughout your session so the finished gallery tells the story of your whole family, not just your newest addition.

What If the Baby Cries or Needs to Eat?
Then we take a break.
Really. That’s it.
Newborns need to eat. They need diaper changes. They need to be held. Sometimes they fall asleep, and sometimes they decide they have absolutely no interest in sleeping.
None of those things mean your session is going badly.
A relaxed family newborn photography session leaves room for your baby to be a baby. We can pause for feeding or cuddling whenever needed and continue when everyone is ready.
And sometimes those in-between moments—the rocking, soothing, tiny hands wrapped around your finger—become photographs you didn’t even realize you wanted.
Your Family Doesn’t Need to Be Picture Perfect
You do not need a baby who sleeps the entire time.
Your toddler doesn’t need to follow every direction.
And you definitely don’t need to have everything figured out a few weeks after having a baby.
Your job is simply to show up and love on your family.
Part of my job as your photographer is to guide you through the session so you don’t have to wonder what to do with your hands, where to stand, or how to get everyone looking perfect at the same time.
Because perfect isn’t really what we’re after.
We’re creating photographs that remind you what your family looked—and felt—like during one of the biggest transitions of your lives.

Planning Your Family Newborn Photography Session in Scottsdale
If you’re preparing to welcome a new baby, you don’t have to wait until life feels calm enough for photographs. With a newborn, that day might be a while. 😉
Instead, your session can meet your family exactly where you are.
As a Scottsdale newborn photographer, my goal is to create a relaxed experience that gives you space to slow down, love on your new baby, and walk away with photographs that preserve this season for you.
Because someday that tiny baby won’t fit quite so perfectly against your chest, their older sibling will look completely different, and the newborn stage that felt all-consuming will somehow feel very far away.
These photographs give you a way to hold onto a little piece of it.
