Phoenix Baby Photographer: Tips for Welcoming a New Sibling

Newborns

Let’s be honest—introducing your older child to a brand-new sibling can feel like navigating uncharted waters.

That’s because… you are!

Even as a Phoenix baby photographer who’s worked with dozens of growing families, I’ll tell you—this transition is different for every child. But one thing is always true: with a little preparation and a lot of love, this can be an incredibly sweet and bonding experience for your family.

So how can you help your older child feel secure, valued, and excited about the new baby?

Here are six practical ideas you can start right now:

1. Start with Books

One of the easiest ways to begin preparing for a new baby is through books. Titles like I’m a Big Sister or I’m a Big Brother by Joanna Cole gently explore the emotions that come with becoming a sibling. These stories can help your child process what’s coming in a way that feels safe and relatable.

2. Let Them Be Involved

As you set up the nursery or choose baby clothes, invite your older child into the process. Let them help pick out decorations or choose a special gift for their new sibling. Giving them a role helps them feel important—and reminds them they’re still a big part of the family story.

3. Keep the Conversation Flowing

Check in often. Ask how they’re feeling about the baby. Reassure them that it’s okay to have mixed emotions. Creating space for open, judgment-free conversations helps your child feel heard and supported as they adjust.

4. Give Them a “Helper” Role

After the baby arrives, many older kids love having a job to do. Maybe they can help pick out the baby’s outfit, bring you a diaper, or sing a song during tummy time. These little “jobs” foster connection—and help them feel like they belong in this new family rhythm.

5. Make Time Just for Them

This one is big. It doesn’t have to be fancy—think a walk through Papago Park, a scoop of ice cream from Handels, or a quick trip to Changing Hands Bookstore. Carving out one-on-one time reassures your older child that they’re still seen and loved just as much as ever.

6. Stick to the Routine

With so much changing, keeping daily routines intact can give your older child a sense of security. Whether it’s bedtime stories or morning snuggles, those little rituals matter more than ever.

As a Phoenix baby photographer, I often see the magic unfold when older siblings are included in newborn sessions. That first snuggle, the shy kisses, the pride on their face—it’s beautiful to witness and even more special to document.

If you’re preparing to welcome a new baby and want to capture those early moments with both your children, I’d love to help.
