What’s one of the first things most women do at the first glint of baby in her eye? Start planning the nursery, of course. Hey, the “nesting instinct” is no joke! A few weeks before baby comes it will set in something fierce and you will be wanting to clean, organize, and get every single detail in shape for that new bundle of joy to come along and turn it all upside down.
Every one parents differently, which is a beautiful thing. Having had six kids of my own, I thought I would share my top three MUST haves for baby’s nursery. Keep in mind that my top three won’t be the same as everyone out there. But it may prove useful for someone reading this so I will continue.
Let’s start this with some frank honesty. I set up nurseries in every house we lived in which we had a baby. Did all my babies sleep in the nursery? Nope. Big fat nope. I had a couple that did, and most that didn’t. In fact, by the last couple of kids I completely got rid of the changing table as well and just had a couple of diaper supply baskets that I kept around the house for quick changes. The items I want to suggest are in addition to the crib and other main furniture like a rocking chair, dresser, and changing table. Whether or not baby sleeps in the crib you will probably have one, and they do make good laundry catchers and stuffed animal cages in case you were wondering, ha!
Must have #1- STORAGE
Babies have so. much. stuff. HOW? How do those little people even have that much stuff? I’m not sure how it happens I just know it does. So you will want to have some awesome containers to store it all in. A dresser is a good start for clothes, and if at all possible a great closet organizer is extremely helpful. The clothes are small so you can make plenty of space to store diapers, wipes, burp cloths, blankets, toys, books, back up pacifiers (get plenty), etc. Since your little one will grow so quickly you will always have at least three different sizes of clothing going on. The just grown out of size, the current fit, and the next size (or several sizes) up.
Must have #2- BABY MONITOR
This item might not stay in the nursery since it basically goes wherever baby sleeps. But the nursery is a good place to start. Back in my day they didn’t have fancy video monitors, but now they are just as available as regular audio monitors. There are some great ones out there and they give that extra peace of mind knowing that you and baby can each have your space, but if they need anything you will know immediately.
Must have #3- CUTE ARTWORK
Yes, this is a must. Truth be told this is basically the whole reason we want a nursery: to decorate it. It’s ok to admit it. Take advantage of this time when your child will have no input in the decor and you can do whatever you want. Before too long you will have to contend with Spiderman and My Little Pony taking over the place. Now is YOUR chance to go wild and make the nursery a place you love being, since there is a good chance you will spend a lot of time there.
Nowadays there is such cute decor available for baby’s room. Make Pinterest your friend and make a board of things you like. Pick a color scheme and style and go for it. There are printables galore on the internet, hand painted signs, adorable quilts, and SO much more that can give you inspiration. One of my absolute favorite things to see in a nursery are darling pictures of baby and family. I like to go BIG in my wall art. I want to walk in and have it take my breath away. That’s the impact of substantial sized portraits, they will literally take your breath away and give you the warm fuzzier something FIERCE.
