Planning a maternity session and wondering if you should include your toddler? The answer is almost always yes—and this recent studio maternity session in Mesa, Arizona is the perfect example of why.
A Studio Maternity Session in Mesa, Arizona
This beautiful maternity session took place in my Mesa, AZ studio, just before this family welcomed their baby girl. There’s something incredibly meaningful about documenting this exact moment—the quiet anticipation right before everything changes.
Mom opted to add hair and makeup services and use the studio wardrobe, so she was able to arrive in her comfy sweatpants and messy bun! Talk about making it easy! She was made camera-ready after having her hair and makeup professionally done by my in-studio artist, which always adds an extra level of confidence and ease to the experience. She chose two different dresses for her session, which gave a nice variety for the session.
What no one expected was just how close baby’s arrival really was—she welcomed her daughter the very next day!

Including Your Toddler in Your Maternity Session
One of the most common questions I get as a maternity photographer in Mesa, Arizona is whether young children should be included in maternity photos. The short answer? Absolutely.
This session was the perfect example of why.
Their toddler son was full of energy, curiosity, and sweetness. Like most toddlers, he didn’t want to sit still for long—and that’s completely okay. Instead of forcing stiff poses, we leaned into movement and interaction.
Those in-between moments often become the most meaningful:
- Little hands resting on mom’s belly
- Quick hugs and giggles
- Curious glances and playful energy
These are the details that truly tell your family’s story.

Letting Dad Take the Lead
Dad played such an important role during this session. He was incredibly hands-on, helping guide their toddler, keeping him engaged, and stepping in with patience and warmth.
When dads are actively involved, it allows everything to flow more naturally. Instead of feeling like a “photo session,” it becomes a shared family experience.

Embracing the Energy of Toddlers
If you’re worried your toddler won’t “behave” during your maternity session—you’re not alone. But the truth is, perfection isn’t the goal.
Toddlers bring:
- Movement
- Personality
- Real, unscripted emotion
And that’s exactly what makes your images unique.
During this session, we allowed plenty of space for breaks, movement, and play. That flexibility made it possible to capture both:
- Beautiful solo portraits of mom
- Genuine family moments with everyone together

Why This Season Matters
There’s something incredibly powerful about documenting the final days before your baby arrives. The anticipation, the excitement, and even the unknown—it all becomes part of your story.
For this family, knowing their baby girl arrived just one day later makes these images even more meaningful. It freezes a moment in time that passed so quickly!
